U.S. President Donald Trump will make a speech at the National Assembly during his visit in early November.

도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 11월 초에 한국 방문 기간 중 국회에서 연설할 계획이다.

It would be a meaningful occasion to highlight the two allies’ shared history and common future goals.

이는 한국과 미국이 동맹으로서 공유한 역사와 공통된 미래 목표를 나누는 의미 있는 기회가 될 것이다.

A larger-scale open-air speech would be more desirable but it is understandable that the proximity of Seoul, the most likely venue for it, to North Korea, would have made such a speech an act of derring-do.

이런 연설은 야외에서 대규모 군중을 모아 진행하는 게 모양새가 좋겠지만 서울이 북한에서 가깝다는 위험 요소를 고려하면 적절한 결정이라고 할 수 있다.

The deployment of two U.S. aircraft carriers plus other strategic assets near the Korean Peninsula during his Asian tour that will take him to Tokyo and Beijing, among other cities, shows the high level of security for the American leader against a potential North Korean provocation.

트럼프 대통령의 아시아 방문에 맞춰 미 해군의 두 항모전단과 추가 전략 자산이 한반도 인근에 배치되고 있다는 사실은 북한의 도발에 철저히 준비하고 있음을 잘 보여준다.

Against this backdrop, the Trump speech could be one of his finest moments by showing his willingness and capacity to resolve the North’s nuclear brinkmanship, one made to look intractable by his predecessors such as Barack Obama.

이 같은 상황에서 트럼프 대통령의 국회 연설은 오바마와 전임자들이 망쳐놓은 대북 문제에 대한 해결책을 제시함으로써 임기 중 최고의 순간으로 남을 가능성도 있다.

He could use it to dispel the growing skepticism about the U.S. commitment to the region amid a strong Chinese push for Asian supremacy.

또한 중국이 아시아를 두고 주도권 경쟁에 나선 상황에서 지역 국가들이 미국에 대해 갖고 있는 회의감을 누그러뜨리는 기회가 될 수도 있다.
