North Korean leader should convey message for peace
북한 김정은 위원장은 평화를 위한 메시지를 보내야
U.S. President Donald Trump will receive a personal letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Trump confirmed he expects the letter from Kim before leaving for Texas on May 31, saying “I look forward to seeing what's in the letter.”
도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 북한 김정은 국무위원장으로부터 친서를 받는다. 트럼프 대통령은 5월 31일 텍사스로 떠나기 전에 김정은의 친서 수신 예정임을 확인하며 “편지에 어떤 내용이 담겨 있는지 보기를 기대한다”고 말했다.
Kim Yong-chol, vice chairman of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Central Committee, will deliver the letter after a visit in New York to hold meetings with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier.
김영철 북한 노동당 부위원장이 마이크 폼페이오 미국장관과의 뉴욕 회동 이후 친서를 전달한다.
Pompeo held two days of meetings with Kim Yong-chol to discuss the planned summit between the leaders of the U.S. and North Korea. Trump had canceled the meeting in an open letter where he blamed Pyongyang for “tremendous anger and open hostility.” But discussions to arrange the summit as planned have been underway after both leaders showed a willingness to meet despite Trump’s previous decision to cancel. During a second meeting with President Moon Jae-in last month, the North Korean leader reportedly conveyed his wishes to end the years of confrontation with the U.S. and work together for peace and prosperity.
폼페이오 장관은 김영철과 이틀 간 회동을 통해 북미 정상회담 준비에 관한 논의를 가졌다. 트럼프 장관은 공개 서한에서 북한의 ‘엄청난 분노와 열렬한 적개심’을 비난하며 북미회담을 취소한 바 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 양국 정상이 서로 만날 의향이 확인되자 정상회담을 계획대로 진행하기 위한 논의가 이어지고 있다. 지난 달 문재인 대통령과 2차 회담을 가진 자리에서 김정은은 미국과 수년 간의 대결을 끝내고 평화와 번영을 위해 함께 일하기를 바란다고 전했다고 한다.
Based the strong will of the two leaders to meet, Pompeo and Kim Yong-chol had some fruitful discussions in New York. “I’m confident we're moving in the right direction,” Pompeo said during a press conference after the series of meetings with Kim Yong-chol. “We’ve made real progress in the last 72 hours toward setting the conditions. The conditions are putting President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un in a place where we think there could be real progress made by the two of them meeting.”
정상회담에 대한 두 지도자의 강력한 의지를 바탕으로 폼페이오 장관과 김영철은 뉴욕에서 유익한 회담을 가진 것으로 보인다. 폼페이오 장관은 김영철과의 회담을 가진 후 기자회견에서 “우리가 올바른 방향으로 움직이고 있다고 확신한다”면서 “지난 72시간 동안 올바른 환경 조성에 큰 진전이 있었다고 생각한다. 우리 대통령과 김정은 위원장이 만나서 진전을 이룰 수 있다고 생각되는 곳에서 회담을 진행하는 것이 바로 올바른 환경 조성이라고 할 수 있다”고 밝혔다.
In a Twitter message, Pompeo said the potential Trump-Kim meeting presents North Korea with “a great opportunity to achieve security and economic prosperity” and a “bright future” for North Koreans. “We envision a strong, connected, secure, and prosperous North Korea that maintains its cultural heritage but is integrated into the community of nations,” he said.
폼페이오 장관은 트위터에서 북미 정상회담이 “안보와 경제적 번영을 이룰 수 있는 절호의 기회”이며 북한 사람들에게 ‘밝은 미래’를 가져다 줄 것이라고 말했다. “우리는 강력하고 연결되어 있으며 안전하고 번영하는 북한, 문화적인 전통을 유지하되 세계 질서에도 통합된 나라를 생각한다”고 밝혔다.
Pompeo also hinted that there were difficulties during the talks, saying “I’ve had some difficult conversations with them as well.” The remark shows the two countries were still having a hard time narrowing the gap on the denuclearization agreement. North Korea has been demanding security guarantees for its regime in exchange for dismantlement.
폼페이오 장관은 “어려운 대화도 있었다” 면서 회담에서 순조롭지 않은 부분도 있었음을 시사했다. 아직 양국이 비핵화 합의를 이루는 데 간극을 좁히지 못하고 있다는 것이다. 북한은 비핵화 대가로 체제 보장을 주장하고 있다.
As Pompeo said, it will take “bold leadership” from Kim to lead his country into a future of prosperity. In his letter to Trump, Kim should assure the U.S. president of his utmost sincerity toward denuclearization.
폼페이오 장관이 말했듯이 김정은이 북한을 번영의 미래로 인도하기 위해서는 ‘대담한 리더십’이 요구된다. 트럼프 대통령에 보내는 서한에서 김정은은 비핵화에 최대한 성실하게 임한다는 확실한 인식을 심어줘야 할 것이다.
