Korea should establish rule of law firmly
한국은 확고히 법치를 확립해야 한다
Former President Park Geun-hye may face harsh punishment for her alleged involvement in a massive corruption case after a Seoul court sentenced her longtime friend Choi Soon-sil to 20 years in prison Tuesday.
서울지방법원이 화요일 박근혜 전 대통령의 오랜 친구인 최순실에게 20년의 징역형을 선고한 후 박 전 대통령 자신도 대형 부패 사건에 연루된 혐의로 엄벌을 면하기 어렵게 되었다.
The long-term prison sentence sent a strong message that the judiciary will not tolerate corruption involving anyone. It implies that it is imperative for the country to end corrupt ties between the power elite and family-run conglomerates. Without breaking such ties Korea can never ensure the rule of law ― the foundation of democracy.
최씨에 대한 장기 징역형은 사법부가 어느 누가 연루됐건 부패를 절대 용서하지 않겠다는 단호한 메시지를 전하고 있다. 이는 권력 핵심층과 가족 경영의 재벌 간의 부패한 관계를 청산하는 것이 무엇보다도 필요하다는 것을 함축하고 있다. 이러한 부패 고리를 끊지 않고서는 한국은 민주주의의 토대인 법치를 결코 확립할 수가 없다.
The ruling against her came 450 days after she was arrested and indicted on 18 counts of corruption in November 2016. The unprecedented corruption scandal triggered a “Candlelight Revolution,” in which tens of thousands ― even more than a million ― poured out into the streets in central Seoul on Saturdays from late 2016 till early 2017.
최씨에 대한 판결은 2016년 11월 18개 항목의 부패 혐의로 그녀가 구속 기소된 후 450여일 만에 내려졌다. 전대미문의 이 부패 스캔들은 ‘촛불 혁명’을 촉발시켜서, 2016년 말부터 2017년 초까지 매주 토요일 서울 중심가 도로로 수십만 명, 심지어는 백만 명 이상의 시민들이 쏟아져 나와 시위를 벌였다.
The mass candlelit protests were the clear expression of people’s anger and frustration at the corrupt and incompetent government of former President Park.
이 거대 촛불 시위는 부패하고 무능한 박 전 대통령 정부에 대한 국민의 분노와 좌절의 명백한 표현이었다.
