상황: 만 1살 된 어린 아이를 데리고 보호자(어머니)가 소아과를 찾아왔다.

(D = doctor 의사; M = mother of the patient 보호자)

D: So, what brings you here today?

의사: 어디가 아파서 왔나요?

M: My kid’s been having a runny nose since two days ago, and a fever since last night.

보호자: 이틀 전부터 콧물이 좀 나더니 어제 밤에는 열이 났어요.

D: I see. How high did the temperature go up?

의사: 그랬군요. 열이 얼마나 났는데요?

M: When I took it at home, it was 38.5 degrees (Celsius).

보호자: 집에서 재니까 38.5도였어요.

D: Does he cough?

의사: 기침은 안 해요?

M: He coughs a little, yes.

보호자: 기침도 조금 해요.

D: My poor boy! Let me get a better look at him. Let’s start with measuring his temperature. It now reads 37.8 degrees. Did he take any fever reducer?

의사: 아이고 가여워라. 자, 진찰 좀 해볼게요. 체온 재보겠습니다. 37.8도에요. 해열제 먹이셨나요?

M: Yes, he did, last night. No medicine since then.

보호자: 네, 어제 밤에 먹였습니다. 그리고는 안 먹였어요.

D: Well, he’s running only a mild fever now. Ma’am, could you hold your boy’s forehead and arms so that I can look into his throat? Nothing weird is found on the stethoscope, and his throat seems fine. It seems that he just has a case of a common cold. Well, I wouldn’t recommend sinus or cough medications for small children like him, his fever may shoot up later. So I will prescribe you some fever reducer. Make sure he stays hydrated by drinking plenty of water and keeping his indoor environment well humidified. If his symptoms are not gone in two days, please come back here again.

의사: 지금은 미열 정도만 있네요. 어머니, 잠깐 아이의 이마와 팔을 잡아 주시면 제가 목구멍을 살펴보겠습니다. 청진 소리도 괜찮고 인후도 괜찮습니다. 감기에 걸린 것 같군요. 사실 이 나이 때는 콧물약이나 기침약은 그렇게 도움이 되지는 않습니다. 하지만 다시 더 열이 오를 수 있으니 제가 해열제를 처방해 드리도록 하겠습니다. 물을 더 많이 주고 집안이 건조하지 않게 수건을 걸어 놓으세요. 그리고 이틀 후에 증상이 안 좋아지면 다시 방문해 주시기 바랍니다.
