During his separate phone talks with American and Japanese leaders Monday, President Moon Jae-in agreed to impose a “maximum level of pressure and sanctions” to induce change in North Korea’s behavior.
문재인 대통령은 미국 및 일본 정상과의 전화 통화에서 북한의 변화를 이끌어내기 위해 최대의 압박과 제재를 가하기로 합의했다.
While talking with President Donald Trump, in particular, Moon stressed that the North “must be brought to the point where it can no longer withstand sweeping sanctions.”
문 대통령은 특히 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과의 통화에서 “북한이 전면적인 제재를 더 이상 견딜 수 없을 정도까지 압박해야 한다”고 강조했다.
It’s encouraging that the three countries reaffirmed their strong coordination against Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile threats.
세 나라가 북한의 핵 및 미사일 위협에 대해 강력한 공조 방침을 재확인한 것은 고무적이다.
Efforts to induce the rogue state to abandon its nuclear ambitions through stepped-up sanctions are surely going in the right direction.

Given the North’s fierce protests of the latest United Nations Security Council resolution, the likelihood is that the recalcitrant regime in Pyongyang won’t back off from its nuclear brinkmanship in the foreseeable future.
최근 UN안보리 결의안에 대한 북한의 강력한 반발을 감안할 때 북한이 가까운 장래에 핵무기를 이용한 벼랑 끝 정책을 포기할 가능성은 거의 없다.
So the maximum level of pressure and sanctions are essential, considering that North Korea won’t forsake its nuclear and missile programs until it finds it impossible to survive without ditching them.
따라서 북한이 핵무기를 포기하지 않고 생존하는 것이 불가능하다는 것을 깨닫기 전까지 핵을 포기하지 않을 것이라는 것을 고려한다면, 최대한의 압박과 제재는 반드시 필요하다.

트럼프 대통령과의 근 1시간의 대화에서 문 대통령은 북핵 문제를 평화적이고 외교적인 방법으로 해결해야 할 필요성을 강조하며 한반도에서 두 번 다시 전쟁이 일어나서는 안 된다고 강조했다.
