Korea, China, Japan should work together
한국, 중국, 일본은 서로 협력해야
South Korea, China and Japan are likely to hold a three-way summit in early May as part of their efforts to work together to find a negotiated solution to the North Korean nuclear issue. This summit, if realized, will certainly help boost international cooperation in denuclearizing the North.
한국, 중국, 일본은 협상을 통한 북핵 문제 해결 방안을 함께 모색하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 5월에 3국 정상회담을 개최할 것으로 보인다. 실현된다면 이 정상회담은 북한의 비핵화를 위한 국제 공조를 강화하는 데 분명 도움이 될 것이다.
We positively assess the three countries’ push for a summit when such a meeting is more than necessary to defuse tensions on the Korean Peninsula. It is drawing keen attention as it is to come between the inter-Korean summit and the U.S.-North Korea summit which are due next month and in May, respectively.
한반도에서 긴장을 완화하기 위해 정상회담이 반드시 필요한 시기에 한-중-일 3국이 회담 추진하는 것을 우리는 긍정적으로 평가한다. 3국 정상회담은 다음달 남북 정상회담과 5월에 예정된 북미 정상회담 사이에 개최되기에 지대한 관심을 끌고 있다.
President Moon Jae-in has taken the initiative in thawing inter-Korean ties and brokering talks between Pyongyang and Washington since the PyeongChang Winter Olympics last month. He has managed to take the driver’s seat in promoting detente and finding a peaceful solution to the nuclear standoff with the North.
문재인 대통령은 지난달 평창동계올림픽 이후 남북 화해와 북미간 대화를 중재하는 데 주도권을 잡아왔다. 문 대통령은 긴장 완화를 추진하고, 북한과의 핵 대치 상황의 평화적 해결책을 모색하는 데 운전석에 앉아 주도적 역할을 해왔다.
Now it is time for Moon to ask for cooperation from China and Japan in driving the North into “complete, verifiable and irrevocable” denuclearization. The two Asian giants are undoubtedly major stakeholders in the denuclearization process. Neither Seoul nor Washington can achieve the ultimate goal of scrapping Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile development programs without the help of the neighboring countries.
문 대통령은 지금 북한으로 하여금 ‘완전하고, 검증가능하며, 불가역적’ 비핵화를 추진하도록 중국과 일본으로부터 협력을 요구할 적기다. 아시아 대국인 이 두 나라는 북한의 비핵화 과정에서 주요 이해당사자임에 틀림없다. 한국과 미국은 이 두 이웃 국가의 도움 없이 북한의 핵과 미사일 개발 계획을 파기하는 궁극적 목표를 달성할 수가 없다.
