Carmakers curb European production as virus hits

유럽 자동차 업계, 코로나바이러스로 생산 중단

MILAN (Reuters) – Carmakers including Fiat Chrysler, Peugeot and Volkswagen cut production at European plants on Monday as they grappled with the coronavirus crisis and diving demand.

피아트크라이슬러, 푸조, 폴크스바겐 등 자동차 제조사들이 코로나바이러스 사태와 수요 감소를 해결하기 위해 유럽 공장의 생산량을 줄였다.

Workers representatives in Italy, France, Belgium, Spain and Germany have demanded stricter controls on hygiene, disinfection and isolation for employees working heel-to-heel on Europe’s production lines.

이탈리아, 프랑스, 벨기에, 스페인, 독일의 자동차 노조는 유럽의 생산라인에서 가까이 붙어 일하는 직원들을 위해 더 엄격한 위생, 방역, 격리 조치를 요구했다.

Audi, Volkswagen’s premium unit, said it was struggling to keep production running at its plant in Brussels because some workers had downed tools over concerns they were exposing themselves to the virus.

폴크스바겐의 프리미엄 브랜드인 아우디는 일부 직원들이 바이러스에 노출될 수 있다는 우려로 조업을 거부했고, 벨기에 브뤼셀 공장에서 생산 차질이 빚어졌다고 밝혔다.

The topic of how to protect employees was now the subject of discussions between management and unions, the carmaker said.

직원들을 어떻게 보호할지에 대한 문제가 노사 간의 협의 주제가 되었다고 아우디 측은 전했다.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is halting production for two weeks at most of its European plants to help protect staff and adjust to a slump in demand, the Italian-American carmaker said.

이탈리아와 미국의 합작 자동차 회사인 피아트크라이슬러(FCA)는 직원을 보호하고 수요 부진에 대응하기 위해 유럽 공장 대부분의 생산을 2주간 중단한다고 선언했다.

Italy has been the European country worst hit by the crisis and the first to enforce a nationwide lockdown, which has now been replicated by Spain and to a lesser extent France as the COVID-19 virus sweeps through the continent.

이탈리아는 유럽에서 코로나바이러스 가장 큰 타격을 받으며 전국 봉쇄령을 내린 첫 국가다. 코로나19가 유럽 대륙을 휩쓸면서 스페인과 프랑스도 이탈리아의 조치를 따라 한 상태다.

French carmaker PSA, which owns the Peugeot, Opel and Vauxhall brands, also said it was closing its European factories until March 27.

푸조, 오펠, 복스홀 브랜드를 거느린 프랑스 자동차 회사 PSA도 27일까지 유럽 공장들을 폐쇄하기로 했다.

Renault said it would suspend industrial activities in France, closing 12 sites and sending home 18,000 employees until further notice.

르노는 프랑스 내 산업활동을 모두 중단하고 12개 공장을 폐쇄하고 추후 공지가 나올 때까지 1만8천 명의 직원을 집으로 돌려보낸다고 밝혔다.
