F: Doctor, my son says one of his testicles is hurting. I don’t know, but the school contacted me about an hour ago so that I could pick him up.
보호자: 선생님, 저희 아이가 고환 한 쪽이 아프다고 하네요. 학교에서 갑자기 연락이 왔어요. 약 1시간쯤 된 것 같아요.
D: May I get a closer look?
의사: 제가 한번 봐도 될까요?
P: (The patient nods. As the doctor examines him, he squints and wriggles in pain.)
환자: (고개를 끄덕인다. 의사가 진찰을 하는 동안 환자는 아파서 얼굴을 찡그린다.)
D: I think he has a case of testicular torsion.
의사: 고환 염전인 것 같습니다.
P: What’s that?
환자: 그게 뭐에요?
D: Simply put, it means that your testicle is twisted inside your scrotum. We have to get an ultrasound to determine for sure. (The doctor calls the nurse’s station and orders an ultrasound scan immediately. When the ultrasound image comes in, the doctor explains it to the patient’s father.) You see, your son’s testicle is locked twisted inside the right side of his scrotum. Fortunately, there appears to be no other problem.
의사: 쉽게 말해 고환이 음낭 안에서 꼬인 거예요. 초음파로 확인해 봐야겠습니다. (의사는 간호사실에 바로 연락하여 초음파를 준비하라고 지시한다. 의사는 환자에게 초음파를 하면서 보호자에게 설명한다.) 오른쪽 음낭 안에서 고환이 꼬였습니다. 다행히 다른 부분에는 이상이 없네요.
F: Is it serious?
보호자: 많이 심각한 것인가요?
D: Testicular torsion blocks bloodstreams from moving into the testicles. It must be solved surgically.
의사: 고환 염전은 고환이 꼬여서 고환으로의 혈액 공급에 장애가 생기는 상태를 말합니다. 수술을 하셔야 해요.
